The school closed on Tuesday a couple of weeks ago without telling half the teachers or any of the students. Apparently it was the school´s birthday so of course, it had to have the day off. They also didn´t tell anyone that the day still counted as part of the the 18 day cycle and that the school would be closed on the final Friday. So my students had a surprize exam on Thursday.
Heard the second best blues guitarist of my life last Friday. Marko, a chiclayan guy who´s going out with one of the Canadian teachers here, absolutely ripped it up with the band in a pretty cool little bar called Taberna. The band finishes playing at 1:30 and then opens the stage up to whoever wants to jam. Marko can´t read music, doesn´t know any scales.... I have no idea how he got so good.
And, with a joyous and predictable thud, I have jumped off of that stoic wagon of sobriety. Friday night marked the end of 3 weeks of not drinking! Week one was by accident so i ran with it. Week two i felt a bit healthier so i kept going. Week three was just boring. Good riddance to sobriety and here´s to partying!!
On the health side (unrelated to drinking, i´m positive) I had a fever last Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, and parasites in my stomach on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. So it was a bad week.
I decided to take a trip to a nature reserve on Friday to make up for this ridiculous week. Tinajones is a beautiful lake, even though it's man made, with mountains all around and sugar cane fields in the valley. There was an arguement when i got there between the two guys who take care of the place because i didn't have some permit. In the end the guy on my side won and i was allowed to stay. He and I then hiked all along the dam to the nearby village of San Jaun and headed back. After the other guy left he, Sko, told me i could stay in the $50 a night bungalow that was brand new, tiled, and the only building on the complex that had electricity. I hid out there until the cop had done his rounds and then i was able to turn on the lights. At night the view of the valley was spectacular and it was the first peace and quiet i've had in month.
Given how well Sko and I got along and what a good guy he seemed to be made the ending all the more of a piss off. He screwed me out of 5 soles on the hostal fee, 1 soles on the collectivo fares, tried to get me to buy him breakfast, and then when i got back to Chiclayo i realized the son of a bitch stole my sweatshirt!!
I went out last night and had a brew, listened to the same band as last week, and wondered what the hell i was doing down here. When i came home i discovered that the neighbours, a nice, quiet, married couple, had stolen my light bulb.
Yep, it was a bad week. And the school hasn't paid me a God-damn centivo yet so i have no idea what the hell i'm doing down here.
